Multimedia Standards and Events in Web Design

Please visit the page on this web site, "Usability Study for Space Artists: Prophets of the Stars,", for an overview of the choices for multimedia for the specific target user group of older teen-age and young adult persons. In this online course, there is much interactivity that accompanies the graphics. Both the artwork and multimedia events have a theme of items relating to the International Space Race, astronomy, geology, and several other sciences. All multimedia is also geared toward the highly creative end of these topics.

Please visit a sample page: "The Art of Georgii Orlov", in the section of the courseware, Oh, Those Russians! The multimedia popup window is an event that happens when the user runs the mouse over the central part of the page. The event is tri-part:

1. The interactive response of the design, for popping up an informational window, without losing sight of the main window;

2. The popup initiates three things: a) an animated GIF of the polar regions of Mars; b) an appropriate MIDI file; and, c) a text-based explanation and link.

3. The user has absolute control over the interactive window. Taking the pointer away from the center of the page causes the MIDI music to stop, and the popup window to disappear.

All elements in this courseware will be produced in the same manner, with appropriate use of reasonably-timed downloads for multimedia events. MIDI files will be around 30Kb, animated GIFs will be under 100Kb, and the goal for graphics of any kind is to keep them under 60Kb. No plans for higher-order multimedia, such as Flash movies or AVI films, are projected. All elements will be in the control of the user.
